Illinois Attorney General finds over 500 sexual abuse victims not reported by the Catholic Church
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office released a preliminary report on December 19, 2018, that found the number of Catholic Priests that have been accused of sexual child abuse to be much greater than the numbers the Illinois Catholic Dioceses had previously admitted to. The report noted allegations have been levied against 690 priests, a number considerably larger than the 185 the clergy had publicly identified. The report however did not state of the 690 allegations, how many of them are credible. It noted that some of the allegations go back decades.
Chicago Cardinal Blasé Cupich acknowledged the archdiocese has been investigating sexual abuse allegations since at least 1991. In 1991 Cardinal Joseph Bernardino formed a special counsel to investigate the allegations of sexual abuse.
The Attorney General’s office noted this is just a preliminary report and it was too soon to know what if any charges could or would be brought against the perpetrators.
The report noted that not one of the dioceses of Chicago had taken any steps to pass or amend policies to hold top church officials responsible for covering up abuse of children.
